General Requirements & Weapons: (applicable to all impressions unless otherwise stated)

1.Facial Hair

No beards, no long sideburns. No artificially unnaturally colored hair. Hair must be cut short and off the ears and collar, many soldaty would shave the head although this is not required, and many troops can be seen with thick hair and there is often a sense of civilian style. Mustaches are permitted on men over 40 years of age. Two or three days beard growth is acceptable depending on the event, but the Red Army soldier should be clean cut most of the time. Women often cut their hair short, but it can also be pulled back and tied.

 2.Eyewear

Eyewear must be appropriate to the period. Round wire-rimmed glasses are common (Think of Lenin) Contact lenses are suggested.

 3.Ornamentation

No earrings or modern looking jewelry is permitted. Piercings, etc. should be concealed if possible. Wedding rings were not common in USSR but are allowed for obvious reasons.

 4.Captured Items

Captured items are restricted.  However, depending on the scenario, limited items may be used with permission from the unit commander.

 5.Lend-Lease items

Lend-lease items are restricted and may be used only with approval of the unit NCOs. Although one lend-lease item is fine (and often correct!) too many items can make an otherwise good Russian/Soviet impression look bad. US and Commonwealth boots are always acceptable after Spring 1942 events.

 6.Camouflage

Except for white winter suits, camouflage is restricted and worn only as needed to portray specialized troops. Scouts, Snipers, etc.

 7.Subdued insignia

Prescribed by regulations, Subdued insignia is recommended. Brass buttons were very common on the 1943 tunic, however, the painted green button is also acceptable. The 1943 tunic (Gymnastiorka) must have the subdued olive shoulder board with raspberry piping for infantry. The prewar uniform should have the wartime subdued green insignia.

* - If you are going to use one of the new semi-auto submachine guns that has a 16 inch barrel, it is strongly recommended that the barrel and shroud (if applicable) be legally shortened to their original dimensions.  Contact the BATFE (http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/index.htm) for further information.
